COMMUNITY OF KWADAPHA

The KwaDapha community is located in what is known as a tribal area at Bhanga Nek. This particular area is situated within the Coastal Forest Reserve section of the Isimangaliso Wetland Park, making it a truly unique and special place. Comprised of four lakes that are interlinked by a network of channels, Bhanga Nek is situated between the third and largest lake, kuNhlange, on the west and the Indian Ocean on the east. Interestingly enough, the entire area was formally proclaimed in 1987 by the KZN Bureau of Natural Resources (KBNR), a provincial conservation authority that governs this area. As a result, this area falls under the purview of the KBNR, and falls under the Umhlabuyalingana Local Municipality within the greater Umkhanyakude District Municipality.

Under the esteemed leadership of Inkosi Isreal mabhudu Tembe of the Tembe Tribal Authority, the Community stands resolute. Represented locally by Induna uBaba Ngubane, this rural and untouched area is truly one of the wonders and best kept secrets of KwaZulu-Natal. The nearest town where most community members get supplies from and go to for employment is Manguzi.

The KwaDapha Community Hub stands as a testament to the power of collaboration between Isimangaliso Wetland Park, Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife, and Wild Oceans South Africa.

The construction of the hub was undertaken with the intention of creating a valuable resource center for communities. The primary objective of the hub is to lend support to key initiatives such as Building Ocean Awareness. Moreover, the hub is also intended to serve as a space where individuals can develop valuable skills and promote micro-enterprise development in the area. Additionally, the hub aims to stimulate and encourage community involvement in conservation activities within the locality.

Bhanga Nek, located in KwaDapha, is renowned for its Coastal Care and Turtle monitoring programmes, which are implemented through Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and the WildOceans organization. In addition to this, the area is home to the famous Oceanic Research Centre situated on the Ocean Side of Bhanga Nek.
