Bhanga Nek is the heart of the Maputaland Turtle Sanctuary, of vital importance for the survival of these species, and the nesting and hatching are wonderful nature-events to watch ( Black Lake)
Early in the summer, female sea turtles come back to the beach they were born on, and at night they lay their eggs. Later, +- 65 days from laying, the little hatchlings emerge to begin their perilous journey to the ocean. Local turtle guides hold concessions to take visitors onto the beach at night on turtle walks. This is from 1 November – 31 March.
The beaches of Maputaland are vital to the survival of various species of sea turtles, so please be respectful.
During turtle season at night, members of the public are not allowed to go onto the beach without a turtle guide except for genuine fishermen who are allowed to fish at night any time during the year, but must respect the turtles and not go near to a female when she comes out of the water onto the beach to nest because any disturbance can cause her to abort the laying process. Hatchlings must also not be disturbed.
When fishing in turtle season, 1 Nov – 31 March, please use only red-light torches because the turtles are very sensitive to white light.
Note if you go on a guided turtle walk, and please be aware that we are dealing with nature, and nothing is guaranteed, so you may or may not see turtles, and you may have to walk quite a distance. Take drinking water with you, and perhaps swimming gear so you can take a cooling dip in the sea when you’ve finished!
